What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is an evidence-based, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that utilizes manual therapy for a wide variety of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Chiropractors are a regulated health care profession in Canada and are one of seven professions designated to use the honorific of doctor.

Chiropractors must complete a pre-chiropractic education program consisting of a minimum of 3 full years of study at a University institution. Quite commonly chiropractors obtain a Bachelor Degree before entering the chiropractic program. Once accepted chiropractors must graduate from an accredited Doctor of Chiropractic program consisting of 4,200 hours (an additional 4 years) of full time study. A practicing chiropractor in Canada must also successfully pass a three-part licensing examination and be registered and pass an exam in the province in which they choose to practice.

Chiropractors have extensive training in human anatomy, neurology, pathology, diagnostic imaging, biomechanics, rehabilitation and nutrition. Chiropractors are more than equipped to assist you in your recovery process and understand the importance of a multidisciplinary health team.

What to expect in the first treatment

Upon your arrival to the clinic you will need to fill out some health history forms. Following the completion of the forms we will start with a conversation about what brings you in. This includes information about your past and present health history, as well as your physical goals for the future. We will then move on to thorough assessment and come up with a diagnosis for your complaint. Once the examination is completed, you will be educated about your diagnoses. This will include a visual representation of why things are hurting and what the chiropractor can do in the treatment room and what you can do at home to help guide you to be more pain-free.

You will be educated about the plan of management according to the diagnoses and best practice guidelines. In later visits we will be reassessing and treating according to your goals, your wants and your needs at the time.

Although every chiropractor undergoes similar education and training this does not dictate how we treat. If a previous experience did not meet your expectations, we urge you to reconsider and let the chiropractor know that. Don’t let misconceptions, one bad experience or preconceived notion hold you back from getting the help you need.
